Concrete- Gray, dull, boring, with either a brushed or smooth surface; this is the stigma concrete can have in many cases. However, with new technology in tinting and dyes, there are no limits to the color options with concrete. Natural landscape and predetermined interior design broadens the overall apeal of concrete as a flooring or hardscape option. Beyond design benefits, colored concrete benefits future stains, such as tire scuffs and oil stains on garage floors. Colored concrete is best joined together with interior sealed concrete and concrete stamping.
There are four common methods to adding color to concrete:
Integrally Colored Concrete: This method is designed specifally for newly placed concrete. The Color is mixed in the concrete before it sets and comes out of the concrete truck already colored. It is fade resistant and truley a great option for mimicking natural stone or allow a space to have vibrancy with the overall finish.
Color Hardeners: Hardeners are applied while placing the concrete. It is broadcasted onto the wet cement while it is still in its plastic state, and troweled into the surface. This can give you a bright color palette, more so than integral color, all the while increasing the surface hardness of the concrete.
Staining: NEW CONSTRUCTION ONLY / Concrete staining is much like stained wood. The stain is translucent and layered to have a multitude of color variances. Staining can be applied to old or new concrete, as long as the concrete has not been contaminated with heavy oil, and grease. Click here for Photos
Dyes: Strictly used for interior projects, concrete dyes provide a much brighter color palatte than stains and can be applied on the job-side unlike integral colored concrete.
