How to Care for your Stamped Concrete

There are a few dos and don'ts to ensure your project continues to look fantastic for years to come!

The Dos..

  • Clean your patio at least every three months.

  • Reseal your concrete after the first year.

  • Reseal your concrete every two years following the first year.

That's it.

The Don'ts

  • Avoid direct contact with metal steel chairs. (This is prone to leaving rust spots) You can apply rubber stoppers at the bottom to help with this. Also, keeping a fresh coat of paint on your steel furniture keeps them from rusting as much!

  • Do not fill your lawn equipment with fuel on the patio. Fuel EATS sealer and stain.

  • If you have potted plants, make sure there is a tray underneath them to collect the water. The fertilizer in the soil leaves the concrete with a white haze where the water runs.

  • Avoid leaving dirt and sand on the patio. This acts like sandpaper when you walk on it causing the sealer to wear sooner than expected.

  • Do not use acid cleaners or bleach to remove stains off your decorative surface. Even cleaning the house, ensure the slab is wet if you are going to bleach the exterior or clean it. Do not let cleaners dry on the slab.

How to clean your patio:
Supplies needed:

  • Dawn Dish detergent

  • Stiff bristle brush

  • Five-Gallon Buckets

  • Water hose

  • Your favorite spray nozzle.

Now that we have the supplies.. Lets clean.

  1. Fill a five-gallon bucket with four gallons of water.

  2. Add two tablespoons of Dawn Dish Detergent. ( Dump the bottle upside down and count a good ONE MISSISSIPPI.)

  3. Wet a 5' feet by 5' feet area with the hose.

  4. Dip your scrub brush in the bucket and work the detergent on the surface in a circular motion.

  5. Rinse this area off before moving to the next area.

  6. Repeat until you have clean the entire area.

Tip: As you clean an area, be sure to not allow the detergent to dry on the surface. I generally just rinse my area well and keep the areas adjacent to where I am cleaning wet as well to ensure I get a good rinse and detergent doesn't dry.

How to Seal your Patio:
Supplies needed:

  • Dawn Dish detergent

  • Stiff bristle brush

  • Five-Gallon Buckets

  • Water hose

  • Your favorite spray nozzle.

  • Pressure Washer (This is for hard stains and mildew.)

  • Plastic Pump-up Sprayer

  • J-18 Concrete Cure and Seal / Sealant

Now that we have the supplies.. Lets Seal.

  1. Follow the steps to clean your patio. (May need pressure washed to remove additional stain and mildew growth.)

  2. Ensure the patio is completely dry of moisture. (This doesn't mean it doesn't have puddles.) Go inside, have lunch, enjoy the rest of your day and seal it a couple of hours prior to dusk.

  3. Fill your sprayer with J18 Sealer. ( A little goes a long way!) Generally, 250-300 sq/ft per gallon.

  4. Spray your sealer in a circular motion 12" above the slab. Ensure you do not puddle the sealant. It needs one coat of a nice mist. This sealer goes on white and dries clear.

  5. Stay off the slab for 12 hours.

Tip: Keep a rag on your to absorb areas that are accidentally puddled. Also, this product if it goes on too thick, will stay milky white.
